5 things that helped me open my voice

My journey into singing was not satraightforward. I was not one of those people that naturally had a good voice, I had to really work at bringing my voice through from the inside out. Here are 5 tips that I learned along the way!

  1. Safety:

The first time I really felt my voice open was when I got my own car in high school. I would sing at the top of my lungs. When I was around other people, I felt tight, self-conscious, and judged. In my car though, I would let it rip without care. What was the secret ingredient to that freedom? Safety. It took me a long time to discover how to create a sense of safety within myself so that I could share without fear of criticism.

  2. Oming and toning:

My singing practice co-evolved with my study of yoga. Part of my teacher training involved making what are called “seed sounds,” the sound of the energy of particular energy systems of the body. By making a range of sound and just focusing on one vibration within my physical body, I began to create connection between my voice and my physical body. I could sense where different vibrations lived and found that sound could help clear stuck energy in my system.

  3. Practice:

The voice is a muscle! When you use it it gets stronger. When I first started singing, my voice was shaky, and somewhat weak. Being consistent and showing up to sing created the pathway to a strong voice. There is power in practice and repetition and the more you do it, the stronger it gets!

  4. Radical truth:

Our bodies are deigned to speak our truth. When we are not living authentically, the voice gets shut down. I discovered this on my own journey. I was in a relationship where  Idid not feel I could express myself fully. After I made the hard choice to speak my truth and choose myself, I felt my voice get so much stronger.

  5. Support:

We are not meant to do this alone! There were so many people along my journey that I could not have done this without, people on the sidelines cheering me on, people to safely share my songs with, and people to help process my raw emotion so I could distill it into song. If you are needing support on your songwriting journey, I would LOVE to be the person to help flip the switch for your light to come fully on so you can show up and sings the songs that are wanting to come through you!
